** GLADIATOR: LATINE REDDITUM**
The idea was to have fun translating the movie into Latin. This
compilation is made from material from the public domain. The movie, book and
print are copyrighted and this is not intended to infringe upon that. It is not

dialogue of the movie Gladiator and in fact, there is no guarantee that our
recollection and representation of any dialogue is accurate. This

WHY
was Gladiator translated into Latin? When the translator, Gabriele Albarosa saw the movie in
2000, he was instantly inspired by the idea of translating it into Latin,
despite never having attempted anything similar before and being an
Information Technology manager, not an academic. Two
years of pain and excitement What followed was two years as exciting as painful of a
few very late nights each month spent head down on dictionary and grammar,
driven by the translator’s passion for classics and a desire to complete a
challenging and deeply satisfying personal project. Madness
has many friends Some obviously said it was mad, many others offered their
very important moral support throughout.
But it certainly was madness - mad passion - that pushed
one of Gabriele’s professors from High School - a distinguished university
academic in Italy (who wishes to remain anonymous until all revision work is
completed) - to offer his help in reviewing and correcting the work,
investing his precious time in making an otherwise amateurial effort into an
altogether more serious work, written with particular care in using
Classical Latin (in line with the historical period - II century AD - in
which the movie is set). A
wish During the many difficult times when the end seemed very
far, the translator drew motivation from the hope that this work would inspire
other students of Latin (past, present and “would-be”) to fall (or fall
again) in love with this beautiful language.

PERCHE’ tradurre Gladiator in Latino? Quando il traduttore, Gabriele Albarosa, vide il
film nel 2000, fu immediatamente ispirato dall’idea di tradurlo in Latino –
nonostante, essendo un manager informatico e non un accademico, la sfida
fosse particolarmente ardua. Due anni di dolore e di soddisfazioni Il seguito di quest’idea
furono due anni di dolorose ma – specie a posteriori – molto soddisfacenti
nottate con la testa affondata nel dizionario e nella grammatica, motivate
dalla passione del traduttore per le lettere classiche e dalla speranza di
completare un progetto personale molto ambizioso. La follia ha molti amici Alcuni ovviamente han detto
che era un progetto folle, altri hanno offerto il loro importantissimo
appoggio morale dall’inizio alla fine. Ma fu sicuramente follia –
folle passione – che spinse uno dei professori di Liceo di Gabriele - un
docente universitario specialista in Latino e Greco in Italia (che vuole
rimanere anonimo finche’ la revisione non sia completata) - ad
offrire il suo aiuto nel rivedere e correggere il lavoro, investendo il suo
tempo prezioso nel trasformare quello che sarebbe stato uno sforzo amatoriale
in un lavoro serio, scritto con attenzione nell’utilizzare un
Latino Classico accurato (il film e’ ambientato nel II secolo d.C.). Un sogno Durante i tanti momenti
difficili quando la fine sembrava molto distante, il traduttore ha tratto
motivazione dalla speranza che questo lavoro ispirasse altri studenti di
Latino (passati, presenti e futuri) a innamorarsi (o ri-innamorarsi) di
questo bellissimo idioma. Chissa’ che un giorno il film non sia proiettato
nella lingua dei nostri padri! |
